Gardner Second Graders Make Stone Soup

The Stone Soup story is a historic folktale about the value of sharing and collaborating. In the tale, hungry travelers convince the people of a town to each share a small amount of their food in order to make a meal that everyone enjoys. They ask door-to-door for a small donation - like a carrot or a cob of corn - so that they can make a magical “soup from a stone.” Once the entire town collaborates by donating small items, the final product is a feast and celebration for everyone. There are several versions of the Stone Soup folktale from different regions of the world. Second grade students read different versions, but all focused on how if everyone helps and contributes a little, everyone can be taken care of.

As a culminating activity, second grade students from classes of Mrs.Long, Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. Huffman, and Ms. Spriggs made their own Stone Soup. Students brought cans of potatoes, corn, carrots, peas, chicken broth, and green beans and combined all items to make a large pot of soup to share. The activity was called "Bring what you’ve got and put it in the pot! We’re making Stone Soup!"

“Students enjoy so much bringing this tale to life. They get to choose which item they contribute, then we do the best we can to let them actually add their ingredients to the soup,” says Ms. Spriggs. “This hands-on activity inspires curiosity about community projects, cooking and recipes, regional folklore, and teamwork in general for all students that take part. It’s one of our favorite activities and has a delicious outcome - usually.”
