Central to the efforts of any school team is a strong support system from parents. Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) groups at each of the #HSSD schools provide much needed support and assistance to teachers and school staff through volunteer opportunities. Gardner Magnet School has reorganized their PTO and is wrapping up a successful membership drive this week. The deadline for the drive is October 1. Gardner classrooms with the largest parent participation receive a pizza party. Any class that has 100% parent participation receives a pizza party and an extra recess.

“PTO matters because it provides a parent conduit between teachers and students. This partnership helps remind students that we are on the same team when it comes to doing what is best for their future,” says Gardner PTO Administrator Mrs. Loretta Ross. “Over the years, I’ve seen PTO volunteers help with food delivery during conferences and other late nights for staff, provide grounds maintenance to flower beds and sidewalks, put together student snacks during holiday celebrations, tackle projects to accomplish building improvements, and more.”

Parents can contribute to PTO groups any way that they want to. A membership fee is collected each school year (which is appreciated, but not mandatory). Members determine how the fees will be used to serve the school which could include covering field trip fees for that students that don’t have the funds, the purchase of school supplies or other materials that budgets don’t cover, the purchase of snacks for fundraisers or student holidays, and other efforts that directly benefit the school and students.

PTO members can volunteer in any way that they can contribute. A monthly meeting is held at the school that usually lasts one hour during the early afternoon. PTO volunteers may be asked to help with school book fairs, field trips, special projects, fundraisers, and other unique events that add creativity and memorable moments to student experiences. Meetings also create valuable networking opportunities for parents between one another, and school staff.

The Hot Springs School District encourages our #TrojanFamily to get involved with PTO groups at each school, or learn more about how to volunteer or donate to PTO events and efforts throughout the year. Thank you to our parents, teachers, volunteers, alumni, and others that participate in HSSD PTO groups.
